12-Time All-Star Chris Paul To Sign With San Antonio Spurs: Report

12-time NBA All-Star and future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul is heading back to Texas. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Paul intends to sign with the San Antonio Spurs.

The 39-year-old will join future superstar and 2023, No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, where they’ll look to take the next step.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Paul will sign a one-year, $11 million contract.

The Golden State Warriors waived Paul on Sunday ahead of the start of the NBA free agency. Sunday marked the deadline that would have guaranteed his contract for $30 million next season. The Warriors reportedly sought trade suitors for Paul ahead of the deadline and released him after failing to secure a trade partner. This came as no surprise, as word had already gone out that Paul would likely be waived if no trade went down. The odds of trading for a 39-year-old point guard who is prone to injuries were highly unlikely. Now Paul gets to play with a young and promising team.

According to Haynes, Paul had a great talk with legendary head coach Gregg Popovich and was sold on the culture and opportunity to help elevate Wembanyama’s game to the next level. Paul is coming off a mediocre season with the Warriors, where he averaged 9.2 points per game, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game in 58 games for the Warriors last season. Paul was primarily used off the bench and, at times, was a good mix with the legendary duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Paul, at 39 years old, is nowhere near the same player he was in his prime with the New Orleans Hornets and the Los Angeles Clippers; however, he is still a capable playmaker and among the best floor generals we’ve ever seen in the NBA.

The 11-time All-NBA member is at the tail end of his career and panned out to one of the most successful careers anyone could ask for. Paul is a nine-time NBA All-Defensive Team, five-time NBA assists leader, six-time NBA steals leader, and a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

The Western Conference remains a tough one. The up-and-coming Spurs are going to get better, with moves on the horizon as they look to take the next step.
