Memorial Day Shooting Map Shows Over a Dozen Injured, Killed

More than a dozen people were injured or killed in Memorial Day shootings that took place in multiple U.S. cities.

Police in at least 12 cities reported shootings that took place over the holiday on Monday. At least five people were killed in shootings reported in Lansing, Michigan; Jacksonville, Florida; Chicago; Baltimore and North Highlands, California.

The shootings also resulted in a minimum of 14 injuries, including six in Lansing, two in both Chicago and Philadelphia, and one in each of Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Phoenix.

The only reported mass shooting event took place in Lansing, where the motivation behind the violence, which took place in the early morning hours, was unclear at the time of publication. The victims were all between the ages of 15 and 20, with a 17-year-old boy dying as a result of the shooting.

“When officers arrived, they found a large crowd of people and multiple shooting victims,” the Lansing Police Department said in a statement to Newsweek. “The Lansing Fire Department responded to treat and transport several of the victims to a local hospital.”

“In total, seven people were shot. A 17-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the statement continued. “At least one person is listed in critical condition. The shooting victims were identified ranging in age from 15-20 years old.”

Lansing Police went on to say that the mass shooting was believed to be an isolated incident. No arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation at the time of publication.

Multiple shootings took place in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia on Monday, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), an online database that collects information about shootings across the country.

The GVA said in a post to X, formerly Twitter, that there had been 42 U.S. mass shootings in May, putting the month on pace to reach fewer than 60 mass shooting for the first time since 2019. The total number of mass shootings in 2024 was reported as 177, down significantly from 246 at the same point in 2023.

Newsweek reached out for comment to the GVA via email on Monday.

Rampant gun crime has long been the focus of intense debate in the U.S., frequently sparking political disagreements over how to address the problem. Meanwhile, several other countries have warned their citizens against traveling to the U.S. due to the gun violence.

More than 6,600 people have died and over 12,000 have been injured in the U.S.—including over 500 children killed and 1,400 injured—as a result of gun violence this year so far, according to the GVA. The group said that only 561 of the shootings this year have been “unintentional.”
