There does not seem to be any word of where the suspects are or whom they may be. Newsweek reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department but did not hear back immediately.

What happened?

Based on witness statements, Wactor had finished his shift as a bartender at Level 8 and was walking to his vehicle early Saturday, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

He was confronted by three people “who had Wactor’s vehicle raised up with a floor jack and were in the process of stealing the catalytic converter,” the press release states. “Without provocation, the victim was shot by one of the individuals.”

Police responded to a call for an “assault with a deadly weapon-shooting” around 3:25 a.m. to the 1200 block of Hope Street. Officers rendered aid to Wactor and requested emergency medical services.

The Los Angeles Fire Department transported Wactor to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Who did it?

Wactor’s brother, Grant Wactor, told PEOPLE that his brother had put his body in front of his female colleague who was also walking to the car and had put his hands up when he was shot.

“He did not confront them,” Grant told PEOPLE. “He did not try to stop them. He was just trying to diffuse the situation by stepping back.”

Grant believes the three men “weren’t expecting anybody to walk up on them.”

“There’s nothing more dangerous than a coward with a gun in his hand,” Grant said.

Anita Joy has spoken out on Instagram, saying she was “with Johnny in his last moments.”

“My heart is shattered with his loss but I believe I have gained the best guardian Angel out there,” Joy wrote in her post. “I love you Johnny Wacky.”

The three suspects involved were wearing all dark clothing and driving a dark sedan, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspects fled northbound on Hope Street.

“These criminals need to be caught – Level 8 needs to provide parking for their late hour staff as they originally promised – This cannot be something that isn’t responded to with action, it needs to be addressed in a manner to prevent anything like this ever happening again to the best of their ability – Level 8 needs to contribute to Johnny’s family to honor and respect him for all the hard work and effort he did for them,” Joy wrote.

“He was a good person,” Grant told PEOPLE about his brother. “He was taken way too early, and no one should be taken like this at all. He touched a lot of people. He believed in his core values to the end, and he lived life to the fullest the way he wanted to. And he was happy doing that.”

A GoFundMe has been set up by Wactor’s godmother, Michaelle Kinard. At the time of writing, over one thousand people have donated more than $97,000. The goal is to raise $200,000.

Comments on the page mention Wactor’s talent and his “imprint that will never be forgotten.”

“Johnny was the kindest soul. My heart is utterly broken and somehow we NEED justice for Johnny!” Kinard wrote on the page. “I want to raise money for his mother, Scarlett, and his brothers, Lance and Grant to be able to travel the distance of 2000 miles (the many times it may take) to take care of this heartbreaking business which they have been sentenced.”

Excess donation will be given to charities of the family’s choosing in Wactor’s memory, according to Kinard.
