The USA Men’s Gymnastics team secured the bronze medal at the World Gymnastics Championships, their first win in this category in 16 years with the help of 20-year-old Frederick Richard.

The team stood atop the podium, with Japan taking the silver and China earning the gold.

This victory showcased the team’s remarkable blend of skill, precision, and unity. The team, is comprised of Brody Malone, Asher Hong, Paul Juda, Stephen Nedoroscik, and Richard, who delivered remarkable routines on the pommel horse, parallel bars, and high bar.

Richard, a Massachusetts native and the only Black gymnast on the team, not only qualified for the men’s gymnastics individual all-around but also juggles his role as CEO of “Frederick Flips.”

He views himself not just as an athlete, but as a CEO, influencer, YouTuber, and emerging visionary, inspired by heroes like Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan. Despite his diverse roles, Richard remains focused on his athletic career and is dedicated to pushing the limits of his sport.

Richard took a significant step in making his name known when he earned bronze in the all-around at the 2023 World Championships, the first by an American man at a major international meet in 13 years.

Although it was a massive achievement for a men’s program had been stagnant for a decade, Richard’s moment of triumph was touched with doubt. His high bar routine during the final rotation wasn’t his best, leading him to believe his chances at a medal were gone. However, when others in the field struggled too, Richard ended up with a result he wasn’t sure he deserved.

It wasn’t until Great Britain’s James Hall came over to congratulate him that Richard smiled, reminded of his true passion for the sport.

The last time the USA Men’s Gymnastics team won gold at this level was in 2008, making this victory particularly sweet for the team and its supporters. It also marks a proud moment for gymnastics in the U.S., following a period of rebuilding and development in the sport.

For decades, men’s gymnastics in the U.S. has often been overshadowed by the women’s program, which consistently produces gold medalists who achieve “first name only” status. Richard is aware of this disparity and is working to change it. His goal is to elevate the profile of male gymnasts, one performance, one viral social media post, and one television appearance at a time.

“One of my goals is to have someone walk down the street one day and you ask them to name a male gymnast and they actually name a male gymnast,” Frederick said to the Associated Press.
