A man who backed into a woman’s car left a note, admitting to what had happened. When he received a response, he was quite shocked.
Dan Chapman, 36, from Baltimore, Maryland, was out with his wife one night and he was looking for parking spot, he accidentally backed his car into another.
“It was dark, and I was moving slowly so I was surprised that when I got out to look at both cars there was a dent in the driver side door,” he told Newsweek.

“it was late, around 9 p.m. and nobody else was out so I didn’t have anyone to ask who may own the car. We looked in our car and while we did have paper, we didn’t have a pen so we walked to the liquor store on the corner, borrowed a pen and wrote a letter basically saying ‘Hey! I’m sorry but I backed into your car, here’s my number give me a call.'”
Chapman was nervous about the response he might get from the owner of the car, but he was relieved when the person was more than understanding.
Taking to Reddit to show the text exchange he shared with the car’s owner, Katie, he said: “What a lovely person.”
He received a message from Katie the next day, immediately relieving any worries he had. “Honestly, I don’t really see any damage,” she wrote, adding that she didn’t see anything wrong with the car that wasn’t already there.
“Unless my bumper randomly falls off while I’m driving today I think you’re good,” she said.
In another message, she told him: “This car has 415,000 miles on it, literally as long as it runs I do not care. Hope you have a great Sunday!”
“Her honesty was a warm reminder that there are lovely people in this world,” Chapman told Newsweek.
Chapman’s post on Reddit went viral with over 66,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments from people sharing their thoughts on the story.
“I had a kid leave me a note years ago on an old Chevy Malibu I was driving, and it said he’d hit my car and dented it, and to call him. I called him and said I couldn’t tell him which dent was his. But that he was a good kid. We had a nice laugh together and I still think about him. I hope he still has those ethics and has had a wonderful life,” said u/Mediocre-Proposal686.
Meanwhile, u/pittgirl12 commented: “I saw two grown men get into a fight because one accidentally (gently) tapped his door against the others passenger door getting out of the car. People love their cars but I just don’t get it.”
“You sir are what we need more of in society. Good old-fashioned honest person with integrity. Good karma was returned to you for being honest,” said u/lulujunkie.
