The San Diego Padres are reportedly listening to trade offers for their ace Dylan Cease.

San Diego has hundreds of millions of dollars wrapped up in its stars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts, which leaves very little money to be used on re-signing Cease when his contract expires at the end of the 2025 season.

FanSided’s Robert Murray recently acknowledged the idea of a blockbuster Cease trade but also noted that it’s unlikely because of how much San Diego values its ace.

“Trading Cease is the more realistic option (than trading Michael King), and even that is no guarantee,” Murray wrote. “Like King, Cease is immensely talented and regarded as one of the best right-handed pitchers in baseball. But the Padres hold a very high asking price in trade talks for the star pitcher and that makes a trade unlikely at this point, despite rumored interest from the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.

“So let’s sit back and wait on any potential trade involving one of the Padres’ starting pitchers. Nothing is imminent – and much of it can be traced back to the lofty asking prices from San Diego executive A.J. Preller.”

The Padres are rumored to be asking for an arm and a leg in return for Cease in a trade. While there are teams that could afford to part ways with the kinds of prospects the Padres are asking for, it’s unlikely.

The Padres would be better off trading Cease this winter because there’s a near-zero percent chance they can re-sign him at the end of the season.
