Kerala Medical Students Booked For Ragging To Be Expelled From College: Minister

Five students who were booked for the brutal ragging of juniors at Government Nursing College in Kottayam will be expelled, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Friday, as per a report on Manorama. The move comes as Minister Bindu promised strict action against the accused linked to the incident. On Thursday, visuals of brutal ragging surfaced on social media from Government Nursing College in Kottayam.

The seniors reportedly used compass to dumbells to hurt private parts as part of ragging their juniors. They also allegedly forced juniors to provide them money and subjected them to physical and mental torture.

The victims alleged that the accused stripped them naked, placed dumbbells on their private parts, and inflicted injuries using compasses and sharp objects. They further claimed that the seniors poured lotion on their wounds and forced them to apply cream on their faces, heads, and mouths as part of the humiliation. The ragging incidents primarily took place in the men’s hostel.

According to the complaint, the ragging began in November last year, with juniors enduring months of physical and psychological torment in the men’s hostel.

The accused—Samuel Johnson (20), Jeeva NS (19), Rahul Raj KP (22), Rijiljith C (21), and Vivek NV (21)—are second and third-year general nursing students.

Following the complaint from three junior students, the Kottayam Gandhinagar police registered a case on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of the five accused.

The arrested students are currently lodged in district jail. They were previously remanded by a local court.

On Friday, ABVP and SFI took separate protest march to the college. Following this, police had to retort to water canons to disperse them.

A team appointed by the Director of Medical Education is set to visit the institution for an inquiry. The probe will be led by the Deputy Director of Nursing Education to assess the extent of the abuse and ensure accountability.
