Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced which position Rafael Devers will play in his spring training debut, and for now it appears his game of hardball is working.
Devers will play third base a week from Wednesday in his Grapefruit League debut, Cora told reporters in the Sox’s spring training camp Tuesday.
According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, Devers’ long-term position is not yet settled, as “no decisions have been made” as to whether he or Alex Bregman will be the team’s primary third baseman in 2025.
Alex Cora said the Red Sox are shooting for Devers to play his first game a week from Wednesday, at third base. He reiterated no decisions have been made. Said Bregman will play second base during Spring Training.

Boston signed Bregman, the reigning American League Gold Glove Award winner at third base, to a three-year, $120 million free agent contract earlier this month. If Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow ran the decision to sign Bregman by Devers — who’s under contract to Boston through 2033 — they apparently came to no consensus around which veteran will be the team’s primary third baseman.
Bregman, 30, is the superior defender to Devers, 28. But Devers has so far refused to cede the position to Bregman.
