Scottie Scheffler Failed 3-Peat at The PLAYERS Has Phil Mickelson Hot Take Hunting

Phil Mickelson entered his content era during the extended rain delay Sunday at The PLAYERS Championship.

After the golf world criticized him for his Joaquinn Niemann opinion, he dropped an even bigger bomb—aimed at World No.1 Scottie Scheffler.

CBS Sports lead analyst Trevor Immelman made a response to Mickelson’s Neimann tweet, and that is when Lefty took his shot.

“Here’s a hot take. Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so,” Mickelson wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Immelman kept the conversation going with Mickelson.

“Phil… this is not just hot, it’s scalding! I do think Scottie wins before the RC. Let’s all keep the receipt on this and revisit throughout the season,” Immelman wrote.

The TV analyst may have kept his answer mature and stoic, but Lefty’s comments still shocked the rest of the golf world.

Scheffler’s last win came at the Hero World Challenge last December, his seventh PGA Tour victory of 2024. Despite not securing a victory yet in 2025, the former Texas Longhorn has not played poorly.

The 13-time PGA Tour winner has dominated professional golf for over two years. After his win in the Bahamas, Scheffler cut his hand during Christmas, delaying the start of his 2025 season.

Ahead of The PLAYERS, he did not finish outside the Top 25 in four starts and has two top 10s.

The 28-year-old did not win three straight at TPC Sawgrass, but it was not a complete failure.

Scheffler did not play his best golf as he went 69-70-72-73 on the week, but it was good enough to likely earn his fifth Top 25 of the season.

Mickelson knows golf, but to suggest Scheffler goes without a win for another six months is wild. However, if his goal is to grab attention, the six-time major winner succeeded yet again.
