To encourage people to turn off the non-essential lights for an hour to raise awareness of the major issues affecting the environment, Earth Hour was celebrated globally, including India on Saturday (March 22).

While observing the Earth Hour, the iconic India Gate and Qutub Minar in Delhi were turned off to conserve energy.

Similarly, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) observed Earth Hour at the Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala by lighting candles in the shape of the number ’60’ symbolising 60 minutes of an hour.

In Hyderabad’s Telangana as well, Earth Hour was observed after lights at the Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat were turned off to conserve energy.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has also observed Earth Hour by switching off lights at his residence in Jaipur on Saturday.

Observing this day, sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik shared the image of his art made of sand symbolising ‘Earth Hour’ on X with the caption, “Earth Hour – an hour dedicated to mother Earth. Let’s switch off all non-essential lights from 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM today and be a part of this global movement. My sand art at Puri beach in Odisha.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also observed the ‘Earth Hour’ with BJP workers by switching off the light and lighting the candle. In a post on X, he said, “On Earth Hour, my fellow Karyakartas and I stood in solidarity to rededicate ourselves for a greener and cleaner planet. From the darkness, let us build a brighter future for everyone, everywhere.”

In a video shared by news agency PTI on X shows lights at the iconic Victoria Memorial in Kolkata were turned back on after switching off.

159 MW Of Electricity Conserved In BSES Area

On Thursday, Bombay Suburban Electric Supply Limited (BSES) appealed to its consumers to switch off power during Earth Hour over the weekend. In a statement, BSES urged its more than 50 lakh consumers and 2 crore residents in Delhi to take part by turning off electricity on Saturday from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, PTI reported.

As a result of Earth Hour, 159 MW of electricity was conserved in the BSES area, while Delhi as a whole saved 269 MW. Comparatively, the city had saved 206 MW during last year’s Earth Hour, according to an ANI-cited BSES official report.

Earth Hour, initiated by the Worldwide Fund (WWF) in 2007, encourages individuals and organizations to dedicate an hour to the planet by switching off non-essential electric lights from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm IST, symbolizing their commitment to environmental conservation.

This year, the Worldwide Fund-India is celebrating Earth Hour 2025 alongside UN World Water Day to highlight the significance of collective efforts in protecting the planet and conserving vital water resources.
