The Toronto Blue Jays have been backed into a corner with superstar infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It was clear they had a decision to make as to whether they would trade Guerrero or hold onto him in hopes of signing him long term.

Toronto went out and brought in a lot of talent this offseason, and it seems like it’s just getting started. The addition of Anthony Santander shows the eagerness to win in Toronto.

But the Blue Jays and Guerrero reportedly haven’t been close to coming to terms on a massive contract extension before the superstar hits free agency at the end of this season.

ESPN’s Buster Olney recently reported there was an update in the ongoing Guerrero contract saga.

“The Blue Jays have made another offer in their negotiations with Vladimir Guerrero, per sources; a gap still remains between the two sides,” Olney wrote in a post to Twitter/X.

It’s highly unlikely the Blue Jays will be able to extend Guerrero’s contract before the slugger hits free agency. This offseason, Guerrero sat back and watched as a very aggressive bidding war ensued for free agent Juan Soto.

If Soto had found a contract extension with the New York Yankees, his deal likely would have been worth around $400 million to $500 million with the latter being the absolute maximum value.

Instead, Soto entered free agency and his price was driven up to near $800 million.

Guerrero will likely opt for the same path, though it’s unlikely his price will drive up nearly as high as Soto’s.

The ongoing efforts to re-sign him indicate the Blue Jays are all-in on Guerrero and winning this season.
