IIT Delhi is India’s top institute for Engineering globally while Indian Institute of Science ranked top among education institutions in the country for natural sciences, as per the QS World University Rankings 2025. Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US remained continued to secure its top spot since the last year. The University of Cambridge in the UK slipped three ranks to bag the fifth spot, while another UK university — the Imperial College London — replaced it at the second spot.
The University of Oxford continued to be the top third university globally this year too.
A total of 79 Indian universities sent 533 entries for the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, up from 424 last year. Of the 533 entries, 156 entries improved, 101 declined, and 154 remained stable.
A total of 122 new entries also made their debut in this edition.
India contributes 79 entries across the five broad faculty areas, with 65 per cent (51 entries) showing improvements.
Universities in India are particularly well represented in engineering and technology (24 institutions), followed by social sciences (20), natural sciences (19), arts and humanities (10), and life sciences and medicine (6).
