In a BBC report, a resident of Lahore named Ibrar Hussain revealed that Hira Mandi has witnessed many phases and changed over the years. He shared that the area was different during the Mughal era and then it transformed during the Sikh period. The British era also brought a significant change to Hira Mandi. He revealed that the Government has transformed Hira Mandi into a food street now. Ibrar shared, “The women who used to live here moved out, and their families live in various parts of Lahore. The bazaar was shut down in 1990, after which all the women who lived here left.”
Ibrar Hussain also shared that the huge sets shown in Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s web series do not have anything in common with the ground reality. He said that the houses that were the Kothas weren’t a grand place and the women would stand on the ‘jharokhas’. “But the state that these houses are in now is the same state that those women are in as well. Those old houses have mostly been destroyed,” he said.
Narrating the history, Ibrar shared that the houses generally did not belong to the ‘tawaifs’ and hence they would be in bad state when old. Hira Mandi used to be a cultural hub in the past where food, music and entertainment all was available.
