NATO Allies React to Donald Trump’s Heated Confrontation With Zelensky

European leaders and officials took to social media on Friday to express their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after he had an explosive Oval Exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The leaders have been at odds recently as Trump has continued to push for a deal giving the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals as part of pursuing a peace deal with Russia to end the war between the two nations.

Tensions have been raised after Trump called Zelensky a “dictator,” prompting criticism from foreign leaders. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said ahead of negotiations with Russia that Ukraine should not expect to regain all of its territory since Russia invaded in 2022.

Tensions seemed to cool following Trump meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer over the past week, with the U.S. president seeming to backtrack on his “dictator” comment and suggesting the U.S. would help Ukraine “get as much back as possible.”

The two world leaders engaged in a heated exchange Friday as they met to sign a deal that would give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals as part of pursuing a peace deal with Russia.

During a conversation in front of cameras, relations broke down as Trump and Zelensky started arguing in front of reporters, leading to Vance jumping in and scolding Zelensky, accusing him of campaigning with Democrats in 2024 and not being “grateful” for U.S. support to fight off the Russian invasion.

After the blow up, a press conference was canceled and the signing of the minerals deal was scuttled.

Trump took to Truth Social shortly after the incident to declare that Zelensky “is not ready for peace” after he “disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Some American lawmakers and officials, including fierce Trump ally Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, demanded Zelensky apologize to Trump and the U.S. for the exchange. Graham even suggested that if Zelensky did not apologize, then Ukraine should consider replacing him.

European leaders did not seem to share that view. Zelensky immediately held a phone call with Macron, followed by a call with NATO Secretary-General Rutte ahead of a visit to London. Other European officials took to social media to write messages of support backing the Ukrainian president.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: “We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Zelensky after the meeting wrote on X: “Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you [POTUS], Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”

Graham, of South Carolina, wrote on X: “Unfortunately, America was disrespected and the deal is off. I have never been more proud of President [Donald Trump] and Vice President [JD Vance] for standing up for America First.”

Graham during an appearance on Fox News later in the afternoon said: “This was a missed opportunity, and the question for me for the Ukrainian people: I don’t know if Zelensky can ever get you to where you want to go with the United States. Either he dramatically changes, or you need to get somebody new.”

Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and prime minister of Russia who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote on Telegram: “A fierce dressing down in the Oval Office. Trump told the cocaine clown the truth to his face for the first time: the Kyiv regime is playing with World War III. And the ungrateful pig got a solid slap from the pigsty owners. This is useful. But it is not enough – we need to stop military aid to the Nazi machine.”

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X: “There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a people being aggressed: Ukraine. We were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago and to continue doing so. We, that’s the Americans, the Europeans, Canadians, Japanese, and many others. Thank you to all those who have helped and continue to do so. And respect to those who, from the beginning, have been fighting. Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, for their children, and for the security of Europe.”

Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on X: “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians do. Therefore we are working on a common path to a lasting and just peace. Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.”

Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, wrote on X: “Dear Volodymyr [Zelensky], we stand with #Ukraine in good and in testing times. We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on X, in Spanish, English and Ukrainian: “Ukraine, Spain stands with you.”

Polish President Donald Tusk wrote on X: “Dear [Zelensky], dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.”

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys wrote on X: “Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security. Mobilizing all political, diplomatic, financial and military support Ukraine is Europe’s key task. Lithuania’s commitment to help Ukraine achieve long-lasting peace is unwavering.”

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna wrote on X: “The only obstacle to peace is Putin’s decision to continue his war of aggression. If Russia stops fighting, there will be no war. If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no Ukraine. Estonia’s support to Ukraine remains unwavering. Time for Europe to step up.”

Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and national security adviser John Bolton wrote on X: “Trump has put the US on the wrong side of the Russia-Ukraine war and it’s shameful. He is every day making it more and more difficult to pull the West back together. After his term, the U.S. will need to convince our allies that we are dependable and still a nation of normal people.”

Zelensky will head to the United Kingdom on Sunday for talks with Starmer as he looks to shore up support from other allies. The long-term ramifications of the exchange with Trump remains unclear.
