Modi, dressed in a deep orange full-sleeve jersey and blue track pants, held a ‘rudraksh’ beads in his hand while performing the bathing ritual. He also wore a ‘rudraksh’ necklace and offered prayers to the sun god and the Ganga.
The Prime Minister travelled by boat from Arail Ghat to the Triveni Sangam, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Along the way, Modi waved to a large crowd that had gathered on both sides of the riverbanks to see him.
After the holy dip, Modi performed a series of rituals, including an ‘aarti’ to the Ganga. For the ‘aarti’, he wore a black jacket and a Himachali cap. He offered milk and flowers to the holy rivers while standing on a specially constructed makeshift platform on the river.
Chief Minister Adityanath stood nearby as a priest guided Modi through the rituals.
Modi’s visit coincided with assembly elections being held in Delhi and the Milkipur bypoll in Uttar Pradesh. Security measures were heightened for the Prime Minister’s visit. However, despite some restricted areas due to security protocols, devotees continued their rituals at other ghats.
The Maha Kumbh, held once every 12 years, began on January 13 and will run until February 26. It is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism. The festival, held on the banks of the Sangam, has attracted millions of pilgrims from across India and the world. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, over 38 crore devotees have visited the Maha Kumbh so far.
