Trump’s Vision for America Looks Like ‘Putin’s Russia’ Says AOC

Former President Donald Trump‘s vision for the United States will look like Putin’s Russia, according to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Pod Save America alongside host Jon Lovett, who served as a speechwriter during the Obama administration. The two discussed the stakes of the 2024 election, which is now less than a week away and is shaping up to be one of the closest races in recent history.

Lovett asked Ocasio-Cortez about the recent news reports of Trump being labeled a fascist. In a CNN-hosted town hall last week, Vice President Kamala Harris called her Republican opponent a fascist. Former members of the Trump administration have made similar statements—including retired General John Kelly, a former chief of staff, and Mark Milley, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who described Trump as “fascist to the core.”

On the podcast, Ocasio-Cortez said, “We need to be very clear about what fascism means. This is not a name that we’re calling people. This is a very specific set of policies and actions that will occur.”

After listing policies associated with Trump, Ocasio-Cortez added, “If you want to know what it looks like, just look at Putin’s Russia.”

Ocasio-Cortez cited Trump’s deportation proposals and the possibility of a national abortion ban.

“Donald Trump talks about mass deportations. One in every 15 people in the United States lives in a mixed-status household. One in every 15. Think about all the people you know, and one out of every 15 of them have a family member who is undocumented. We’re talking about breaking up every 15th family in the United States.”

A core element of the GOP’s 2024 immigration policy involves mass deportations, which would see the removal of millions of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. Trump has also pledged to deport immigrants residing in the country legally, including the more than 1 million people admitted through the Temporary Protected Status program.

On the topic of abortion, Ocasio-Cortez said: “A national abortion ban would triumph over any state-level abortion protection. We’re talking about abortion being banned in the United States point-blank, period.”

Like immigration, abortion has been a top issue for voters in the lead-up to November’s election.

Harris has made securing abortion rights central to her campaign, while Trump has taken multiple stances on the issue over the years.

Project 2025, the conservative playbook that Trump has been linked to, would curtail abortion access nationwide. Trump has distanced himself from the project and said earlier this month that he does not support a national abortion ban.

Ocasio-Cortez discussed on the podcast how surveillance technology could be used under a national ban. She said: “Unlike the 1970s, today we have a level of surveillance technology which was unthinkable then.

“You can be tracked, and they want to track you, based on any amalgam of information—from your cycle, from your Fitbit, from geolocation on your phone—if you try to get an abortion anywhere else.”

Speaking of a second Trump presidency, Ocasio-Cortez said: “We’ve gone down this path, and it’s going to be a hundred times worse because Donald Trump knows what mistakes he made the first time now. And he knows that he will not need to install professionals, he just needs to install sycophants. And he’s made that very, very, very clear.”
