Veteran playback singer Udit Narayan recently found himself at the center of controversy after a video of him kissing a female fan went viral. While the internet has been abuzz with comments slamming the singer, fellow singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has now come to his defense, recalling a similar experience from his own career.

Speaking to News18, Abhijeet said that such incidents are not uncommon for singers, especially those with massive fan followings. “Udit is a superstar singer, and situations like these are a regular occurrence for us. If we aren’t surrounded by bouncers or security, fans can sometimes get overly enthusiastic. It has happened to me as well,” he shared.

Recalling an incident from his early days in the industry, Abhijeet recounted, “During a concert in South Africa, a group of three or four girls kissed me so aggressively on my cheeks that I couldn’t even go back on stage. And all of this happened in front of Lata ji (Mangeshkar). My face was covered in lipstick marks!”

The singer also pointed out that Udit Narayan’s wife often accompanies him on tours and performances. He remarked, “He’s Udit Narayan! Girls have always been drawn to him; it’s not like he forced anyone. His wife is always there with him as a co-singer. Let him enjoy his success! He’s a romantic singer, a big khiladi, while I’m just an anari. Koi unke saath khelne ki koshish mat karo (Don’t try to play games with him).”

The viral video and Udit Narayan’s response

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced online showing Udit performing his iconic ‘90s hit Tip Tip Barsa Pani. During the performance, a female fan approached him for a selfie. As she leaned in to kiss him on the cheek, Udit turned his head and kissed her on the lips. The video quickly gained traction, with social media users criticising the moment.

Addressing the situation in an interview with HT City, Udit downplayed the incident, attributing it to the passion of fans. “Fans express their love in different ways. Some extend their hands for a handshake, while others kiss the hands. There’s no need to make such a big issue out of it. We are decent people, and bodyguards are always present at such events. But fans feel lucky to meet us, and they show their excitement. This is all part of their devotion,” he stated.
