A father of four was caught on camera having an emotional reaction to seeing his only daughter in pigtails for the first time, leaving viewers teary eyed.
Brittany Smith (@scrunchy_ma) decided to style her daughter’s hair in pigtails while her husband, Jhason Smith (@jhasonssmith), 34, was out getting groceries. When he walked through the door, his reaction was priceless—and Brittany made sure to capture the heartfelt moment on video. The clip has since racked up 2.5 million likes and 12.5 million views on TikTok.
“It was the sweetest thing. My heart melted at his love for her,” Brittany, from Nashville, Tennessee, told Newsweek. “I know how much he’s impacted my life and so knowing she gets to have him from the very beginning of her life is a feeling I don’t know that if I was fully prepared for.”
In the now-viral video, Jhason can be seen entering the house and immediately reacting with joyful coos upon seeing his daughter’s adorable new hairstyle.

“Baby,” he gushed before he lifted her into his arms and gave her a loving kiss.
Brittany explained that pigtails are a special milestone for little girls, and she and Jhason had planned this moment for a long time.
“Pigtails on little girls is like a rite of passage,” she shared. “But my husband specifically told me to not tell him when I would do them for our daughter for the first time once her hair got long enough because he wanted to be surprised. I knew after three sons this was going to be a big moment.”
She further reflected on the significance of the moment, recalling how she spontaneously decided to grab her phone to film. Brittany said her husband had always dreamed of having a daughter and had even picked out her name long before they got married.
After welcoming three sons, the anticipation for their little girl grew, and after 12 years, they finally met the child they had imagined for so long. She described the bond between Jhason and their daughter as inseparable, saying: “They are two peas in a pod.”
Jhason also shared his thoughts on the experience, acknowledging that the common belief about fathers becoming “soft” when they have daughters is very real.
He explained that raising sons comes with the weight of knowing they look to him as a role model, which can be intimidating. However, when it comes to his daughter, he is keenly aware that the way he loves and treats her will shape her self-esteem, security, and expectations in future relationships.
“It’s a daily reminder to be the very best husband I can be to my wife,” he told Newsweek.
He also reflected on how quickly time passes, especially with children.
“Life is so busy, time is a vacuum, especially with kids. As difficult as it is, if you don’t take time to slow down and enjoy the season of life you’re in, it will be gone before you know it,” he added.
