New York Giants tight end Darren Waller dropped a song and music video on Thursday a month after it was announced that he and his ex-wife, Kelsey Plum, were filing for divorce.

Waller, 31, said earlier this offseason that he was contemplating retirement. With no update on his future in football, he has released his first song about past relationships and told TMZ he plans to release a full album later this year.

Here’s the full song and music video:

The song is called “Who Knew (Her Perspective)” and is from the perspective of a woman trying to love him. The music video features Waller talking to a woman, seemingly representing someone from his past relationships.

“I’ve struggled with intimacy in romantic relationships my whole life, and I recognize the toll it has taken on the lovers I’ve been close to,” Waller said to TMZ. “Essentially, I’m telling myself, from the damage I’ve done, that it’s imperative for me to heal the wounds in my life I’ve been avoiding by seeking relationships.”

Plum and Waller filed for divorce in April just 13 months after they got married. Plum posted on social media that day: “I’m devastated. I walked through fire for that man, but now I see it’s time to go. God has given me such an incredible life, and I’m truly so grateful for the profound love from my family and friends. One day I’ll share my story, today is not that day. Thank you for the grace to process my pain to forgive and move forward. Today and every day I will continue to choose joy.”

Waller hadn’t spoken out about the divorce up until this point but has now released this song. It’s unclear if it’s about Plum or just his relationships in general.

“You know, in life, it’s hard to love. It’s hard to be free,” Waller says at the beginning of the song. “It’s hard to give all of your soul and have your heart broken in return but it’s time.”

The chorus goes:

“How long I got to climb up this hill, I’m tired and I want to be still. Imagine if we fell out of tune, cause (expletive), who knew that love could kill… Thought our love was real, who knew that love could kill.”

The Giants have started OTAs and still have Waller listed as the starting tight end on their depth chart. In his first season with New York last year, he appeared in 12 games, catching 52 passes for 552 yards, and one touchdown. He’s under contract through the 2026 season.
