Details have been extremely sparse about the upcoming series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” For example, all we know about Paul Giamatti’s villain is that he has some kind of connection with one of the Starfleet cadets. But now Collider has gotten some enlightening details out of Giamatti himself.

Giamatti didn’t offer any specific plot points or origin details about his character, but he certainly gave a feel for the guy. “He takes great pleasure in being the villain,” Giamatti said. “He likes it. And it’s very much a part of his thing that he’s all ‘Oh yeah, I’m the bad guy.'”

He also said he feels his character might feel more like someone who went up against old-school Trek heroes like James T. Kirk than against later captains like Picard. “To my mind, it feels very, very old-school Star Trek,” Giamatti said. “My character is a very fun villain; he reminds me of a combination of classic Trek villains. That’s all I’ll really say.”
Longtime fans will be glad to hear that Giamatti counts himself among them. The star had wanted to be a part of a “Star Trek” project, and he used the awards season and his Oscar nomination for “The Holdovers” to help him do it.
“It was the advantage of going through the awards thing and having people ask me about stuff I’d like to do. I was like ‘Gosh, I love Star Trek,’ and I think that actually must have worked for once in my life,” Giamatti explained. “I put it out in the universe and it came back. I’m not gonna say I’m a superfan or anything, but from the time I was a child, I’ve been a big Star Trek fan. I haven’t watched all the iterations, but I’ve watched a lot of it, and I do really kind of love it.”
“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” is expected to premiere on Paramount+ late this year or early next year. Details on the plot are being kept under wraps. Starring as regulars are Holly Hunter, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandra Rosta. Tatiana Maslany, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti will appear in recurring roles. Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr are expected to make guest appearances.
