Taylor Swift’s close friend, actress Jaime King, is in the midst of a massive child custody change involving her two sons, one of whom is Swift’s godson.

King’s ex-husband, Kyle Newman, has been awarded sole physical custody of the former couple’s sons James, 11, and Leo, 9, according to court documents obtained by People in a report published on Monday, March 17. The documents further note that Newman makes any “tie-breaking” decisions for the boys.

King, for her part, has visitation rights with her sons and can see them three times per week, with supervised visits. The Hart of Dixie alum’s visits must be supervised, per the paperwork, because she has allegedly not completed a six-month drug and alcohol program, a 26-week parenting program, individual therapy, as well as therapy family with her sons.

The White Chicks star was married to Newman for 13 years before filing for divorce in 2020. The details of their fractured relationship came to light amid the divorce, with King alleging domestic violence against Newman, per People, and with Newman claiming that King refused to get help for her alleged alcohol and drug problem. He further accused her of doing drugs while pregnant with Leo — Swift’s godson — claiming the couple found out at her 20-week doctor’s appointment that “our unborn child was also addicted due to her continued drug use.”

After Leo’s birth in 2015, King gushed to Elle about how she knew Swift would be Leo’s “perfect” godmother.

“I always knew she was going to be the godmother if I had another baby. It’s because she’s incredibly thoughtful,” the actress shared at the time. “Choosing a godmother is a very sacred and important thing in our family. They’re going to be guiding your child, and they’re responsible for them if something was to ever happen. We try and choose people who we know would raise our child the way that we would raise our child and her thoughtfulness, her kindness, her authenticity — the way that she’s generous with her family, with her friends, with her fans — is so powerful to me. … It’s all her.”

As for Swift’s reaction to being asked to fulfill such an honor, the pop icon “cried … all the fun things that best friends do,” King said.
